Lots of birds today and 3 new records for the spot with good NNE winds conditions. Some divers with 16
Red-throated Divers and 44 Black-throated Divers. Few ducks except  scoters with 911 Common Scoters and 4 Velvet Scoters. Important movements for waders with 46 Oystercatchers, 2 Avocets, 49 Ringed Plovers, 329 Grey Plovers, 943 Knots, 110 Sanderlings, 26 Dunlins,
1 120
Bar-tailed Godwits, 76 Whimbrels, 3 Curlew, 12 Redshanks, 2 Common Sandpipers and 33 Turnstones (new spring record). Good movements for skuas with good winds, 8 Pomarines Skuas (new spring record), 13 Arctic Skuas and 1 Great Skua. Very good numbers for terns with 234 Sandwich Terns, 5 741 Common Terns, 80 Arctic Terns, 91 Little Terns, 172 Black Terns (new spring record) and 1 White-winged Black Tern.

Slowly, winds becomes better for the spot !  Few divers with 5 Red-throated Divers and 14 Black-throated Divers. Significative movements for Gannets (633 ind). Good numbers for Scoters with 613 Common and 4 Velvet Scoters. 1st important migration for waders with 53 Oystercatchers, 51 Ringed Plovers, 161 Grey Plovers, 1 170 Knots (new spot record for spring), 187 Sanderlings, 3 Curlew Sandpipers, 102 Dunlins, 66 Bar-tailed Godwits, 97 Whimbrels, 1 Redshank, 1 Common Sandpiper and 6 Turnstones. Some skuas with 7 Arctics Skuas. Poor movements for gulls and terns with 5 Mediterranean Gulls, 7 Little Gulls, 58 Sandwich Terns, 647 Common Terns, 12 Arctic Terns, 14 Little Terns and 30 Black Terns

Weather
CGN : E2 Bft -  Sun  -  Visibility  2km => < 1km (heat haze)

Light East winds produced lots of diversity for uncommon species to the spot and the 1st ever Red-footed Falcon (Ad female) for Cap gris-nez. Again few divers. Observation of the 3rd Balearic Shearwater for this spring (flighing north). 4 Grey Herons and 6 Spoonbills. Few ducks with 7 Brent Geese, 4 Shovelers, 1 garganey. 2 Merlins are the other raptors for the day. Few warders. An other correct movement for gulls and terns with 6 Mediterranean Gulls, 5 Little Gulls, 105 Sandwich Terns, 2 242 Common Terns, 5 Arctic Terns, 42 Little Terns and 69 Black Terns.

Faw divers with 7 Red-throated Divers and only 7 Black-throated Divers. Few ducks with 3 Velvet Scoters. Few raptors with 2 Sparrowhawks and 1 Merlin. Good passage for waders with 12 species, 49 Oystercatchers (flighing south), 50 Grey Plovers, 332 Knotss, 62 Sanderling, 1 Curlew Sandpiper, 7 Dunlins, 14 Bar-tailed Godwits, 6 Whimbrels, 3 Redshanks, 4 Greenshanks, 1 Common Sandpiper and 1 Turnstone. Only 3 Arctic Skuas (poor conditions for skua movements on the french side of the channel...). Good movements for terns with 220 Sandwich Terns, 1 731 Common Terns, 22 Arctic Terns, 39 Little Terns and a good 81 Black Terns. lots of differents passerines with a uncommon specie for the spot, 2 Hawfinches.

2nd may 2008

Light migration today with bad winds conditions for the spot. Few divers with 13 Red-throated Divers and  13 Black-throated Divers (poor numbers this year). Few ducks with local movements for Common Scoters and 6 Velvet Scoters flighing north. Again 2 March Harriers (13 for the season is the best spot total). Few waders. Good movements for terns with 2 109 Common Terns, 49 Arctic Terns, 44 Little Terns and  35 Black Terns, end of passage for Little Gulls with 7 birds today. Lots of Barn Swallows at the top of the cliff with thousands coming from north and crossing the channel before seawatching spot (so, not visible from spot).

First important movement for Arctic Terns with 155 birds. Identification still difficult and only relatively close birds could be identify without any doubt. Very good movements for skuas with 45 Arctic Skuas  (Adultes 3 sorts plumage) and 2 Pomarines Skuas. Few divers with 18 Red-throated Divers and best numbers for 41 Black-throated Divers. Few ducks. Good diversity for waders but poor numbers with 10 Oystercatchers, 6 Grey plovers, 6 Sanderlings, 3 Dunlins, 111 Bar-tailed Godwits, 11 Whimbrels, 1 Curlew and the 1st Common Sandpiper for the season. Classic movements for terns and gulls with 688 Little Gulls, 755 Sandwich Terns, 1 033 Common Terns, 1 Black Tern

Séance assez particulière avec un bon passage (très proche) malgré un brouillard intense. A nouveau très peu de plongeons et de grèbes. Passage marqué pour le Fou de Bassan (394 ind.). Peu de diversité pour les anatidés avec 12 Tadornes de Belon, 11 Sarcelles d'hiver, 51 Canards souchets, 1 Eider à duvet, 23 Harles huppés et des mouvements locaux pour la Macreuse noire. Quelques limicoles avec 20 Huîtriers pie, 5 Avocettes, 8 Grands Gravelots, 19 Pluviers argentés, 3 Bécasseaux variables, 44 Courlis corlieux, 1 Courlis cendré et 1 Chevalier gambette. Bonne présence du Labbe parasite avec 18 individus (dont 1 ad clair). Bon mouvement pour les sternes avec 1 920 Sternes pierregarin, 2 Sternes arctiques, 65 Sternes naines, 540 Sternes caugek , 11 Guifettes noires, nous notons également 259 Mouettes pygmées et 210 Mouettes rieuses (1er été). Peu de passereaux sur mer mais gros passage d'hirondelles en haut du cap (non visibles depuis le poste de seawatch).

Good seance during 2 hours with a ENE 3Bft wind, with many species and birds close to the spot, unfortunably winds strenght to ENE 6Bft stop the movement. Few divers and grebes and 1 Black-necked Grebe. Few ducks with 3 Gadwalls, 20 Teals, 2 Pintails, 48 Shovelers. Some raptors again with 3 Marsh Harriers and 1 Milan noir (only 2nd mention for the spot !) from sea. Good variety for waders with 2 Oystercatchers, 6 Grey Plovers, 7 Knots, 24 Sanderlings, 7 Dunlins, 3 Ba-tailed Godwits, 4 Whimbrels, 6 Redshanks and 4 Greenshanks. Few skuas with only 2 Great Skuas and 3 Arctic Skuas (1 light ad). Few gulls and terns but the birds are very close, we note 456 Little Gulls, 423 Sandwich Terns, 268 Common Terns, and 3 Black Terns.

15th april 2008

Many species and some good numbers, birds are seen close with a north winds. Few divers and grebes with 3 Slavonian Grebes (summer plumage). Good specie with a Balearic Shearwater flying north (4th mention in spring, 2nd this year). Gannets in good numbers (310 ind.) numbers were poor these lasts dayst . Few ducks and geese with 19 Brent Geese, 12 Shelducks (north and south), 4 Gadwall, 5 Eiders, 160 Scoters (most flying south) and 44 Red-breasted Merganser. Few waders with 26 Grey Plovers, 46 Dunlins, 7 Black-tailed Godwits, 17 Bar-tailed Godwits and  9 Whimbrels. Again 1 Pomarine Skua adult (without any tail !!!) and 18 Arctics Skuas (All darks and intermediate) and 3 Great Skuas. For gulls and terns, good numbers for Common Tern (1 029 ind.) and Sandwich Tern (975 ind.) and usual numbers for 428 Little Gulls, 3 Arctic Tern, 49 Little Terns, and the firsts 2 Black Terns for the saison. Good movements for passerines with 3 Sand Martins, 76 Swallows, 5 House Martins, 128 Goldfinchs, 2 Siskins and 177 Linnets.

Few birds and few species with 436 Little Gulls, 385 Common Terns and the firsts 4 House Martins. One good specie with 3 Pomarines Skuas (adults) (earlier for the spot in spring), and 10 Arctics Skuas.  We note the 1st 4 House martins for the spring.



13th april 2008

Very good numbers for skuas and terns with 40 Little Terns (1st for spring), 3 612 Common Terns, 471 Sandwich Terns, and 1 839 Little Gulls, 12 Great Skuas (very good for spring) and 24 Arctic Skuas (ad dark, intermediate, pale). Good numbers for 99 Red-throated Divers and classic for 33 Black-throated Divers. Other intersting species concerned 1 Red_necked Grebe, 2 Brent Geese, 403 Scoters, 4 Velvet Scoters and 19 Red-breasted Merganser. Few auks, waders and passerines.

Difficults observation conditions with all the birds high in the sky (mainly for Black-throated Divers and ducks). Period of increase numbers for Black-throated Divers (57 ind.) and decrease for  Red-throated Divers (57 ind. too). Some grebes with 21 Great crested Grebes and 2 Slavonian Grebes. An other time good numbers and diversity for ducks with 26 Brent Geese, 32 Shelducks, 10 Wigeons, 16 Gadwall (good numbers this year with already 35 birds), 16 Teals, 2 Mallards, 92 Shovelers, 1 013 Common Scoters, 5 Velvet Scoters and 67 Red-breasted Merganser. Some raptors with 3 Marsh Harriers, and 1 Merlin. Migration in poor numbers for the period concerned Little Gulls (94 ind.) and Sandwich Terns (82 ind.), usual numbers for 280 Common Terns.

Important movements for Common Scoter (3 437 ind.) and Red-breasted Merganser (210 ind. Equal best ever of 26 nov 1978) and very good session for geese and ducks with 1 Pale-bellied brent Goose (1st ever for spring) and 97 Brent Geese, 6 Shelducks, 3 Wigeons, 6 Gadwalls, 2 Teals,   2 Mallards, 2 Pintails, 16 Shovelers, 2 Pochards, 1 Scaup, 20 Eiders and 6 Velvet Scoters. Few waders but firts Whimbrels (13 ind.) for the year. Some skuas with 8 Arctic Skuas (all dark adults), 1 Pomarine Skua (imm), 1 Great Skua. Few gulls and terns with 21 Mediterranean Gulls, 163 Little Gulls (poor migration for the period), 182 Sandwich Terns and 33 Common Terns. Few passerines with 1 Great spotted Woodpecker (from sea !!) and 4 Swallows.

Heavy migration during the 2 firsts hours of the day. Good numbers for 426 Red-throated Divers, beginning of spring migration for 7 Black-thoated Divers (usual period). Some Great crested Grebes (17 ind.) and 1
Red-necked Grebe. Few duck species with 31 Bent Geese, 1 Shelduck, 2 Wigeons, 3 Eiders, 29 Velvet Scoters (flying north and south) and very good numbers for Common Scoters (2 594 ind.). Firsts 5 Arctic Skuas and 7 Common Terns for spring. First big movement for Sandwich Terns (465 ind.). Good numbers for Little Gull ( 842 ind.), and 120 Common Gulls. Quiet condition after stormy NNW previous days produced 739 Gannets and 1 274 Kittiwakes. Today the 3 diver's species seen with 52 Red-throated Divers, the 1st Black-Throated Diver (Breeding plumage) and a early Great northern Diver. Again good movements for 86 Great-creasted Grebes, also 1 Back-necked Grebe (breeding plumage). Some Geese and ducks with 64 Brent Geese, 1 Egyptian Goose, 3 Gadwall, 4 Teals, on group with 97 Pintails, 7 Shovelers, 123 Common Scoters and 1 Red-breasted Merganser. Again 1 immature Pomarine Skua and a Great Skua. Other gulls were 9 Mediterranean Gulls, 89 Little Gulls, 40 Common Gulls and 15 Sandwich Terns. Few auks and passerines.

Few birds today. Again few
Red-throated Divers (64 ind.). Good passage for 58 Great-crested Grebes. Few ducks today with 2 Brent Geese, 8 Wigeons, 3 Eiders, 209 Scoters (Most flying south), 9 Velvet Scoters (Flying South), and 2 Red-breasted Merganser.  Few waders with 1 Oystercatcher, 4 Ringed Plovers, 6 Purple Sandpipers, 34 Dunlins and 4 Curlews, other bird concerned 3 Great Skuas. Few gulls and terns with 12 Mediterranean Gulls*, 6 Little Gulls and 29 Sandwich Terns. Good nombers for auks after a poor period with 36 Guillemots, 154 Razorbills, and 316 Auks species. Some passerines with the 3 firsts Wheatear.

1 st quiet weather conditions after a stormy week produced good migration.
Again few divers with only  51 Red-throated Divers. Lots of ducks species today with some unusual ones with 9 Garganey (aqual spot record), 3 Scaup (uncommun those last years), 3 Goldeneyes and especially a 1 femele Smew (no bird for at least 10 years). Common species concerned 112 Brent Geese5 Egyptian geese, 23 Shelducks, 5 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 36 Teals, 1 Mallard, 62 Shovelers, 1 Tufted Duck, 17 Eiders, 541 Scoters, 2 Velvet Scoters and 17 Red-breasted Merganser. Some skuas with 3 Great Skuas, nearly daily this year, and 1 juvenile Pomarine Skua.  Many Little Gulls for the period with 508 birds. Already good numbers for 23 Sandwich Terns. The firsts significative movements for passerines, lots of birds crossing the channel with 88 Stok Dove (spot record), 317 Wood Pigeons, the first 2 Sand martin and 1 Swallow (early spot's date for the 2 species), 3 Chifschaffs, 5 Blue Tits, 60 jackdaws.... and few over species.

First ever for march at cap gris-nez, a Balearic Shearwater, flying north at close distance (Very pale plumage). Usual nombers for
186 Red-troated Divers. Some movements for Great-crested Grebes (22 ind.). Good numbers for few duck species with 547 Brent Geese, 288 Common Scoters, other birds are 1 Eider and 7 Red-breasted Merganser. Some shorebirds with 13 Oystercatchers, 3 Avocets (1st for season), 2 Dunlins and 4 Curlews. Some moving Great Skuas (5 ind.). Good nombers for 37 Mediterranean Gulls, 120 Commun Gulls, 4 Little Gulls. Few auks.

Classic movements for 101 Red-troated Divers. Good diversity for ducks with 313 Brent Geese, 1 Barnacle Goose, 28 Wigeons, 2 Gadwall, 21 Common Teals, 53 Pintails, 28 Shovelers, 31 Scoters and 1 Red -breasted Merganser. 5 local Great Skuas are noticed. Early migration for 36 Little Gulls, the usual date is around the 10st marsh for significative numbers (except last year at the same period).

Good numbers for Red-troated Divers (370 ind.), few ducks but 5 Barnacle Geese (1-3 mentions per year) are seen, 12 Brent Geese, 35 Wigeons, 51 Scoters are seen. Over good species concerned 3 Great Skuas and 1 Immature Glaucous Gull.






10th february 2008

Good seance for ducks. Local movements locaux for 121 Common Scoters, 2 Eiders, 2 Mallards et 3 Shelducks. Other species in migration (flying north) in mix groups with 44 Greylag Geese far at sea (other groups on french coast were 90 from sea at Wimereux and 50 at Marquise), 20 Wigeons, 5 Teals, 29 Pintails, 3 Shovelers, 1 Red-breasted Merganser and only 5 Brent Geese (D.Walker for Dungeness Bird Observatory informe me to have seen 4300+ Birds in 2 days). It confirm the very early migration for this species already seen 4 times in good numbers during january at the Cap. Some other birds concerned 152 Red-troated Divers (flying south), 4 Slavonian Grebes (south), 1 Shag, 473 Gannets (flying north), 2 Great Skuas, and 200 Auks (local movements), 2 Grey seals and today is the first sighting of the year for 4 Harbour purpoise.

Good numbers for common species in one hour observation with goods NW winds with 355 Gannets, 260 Kittiwakes, 123 Auks, 8 Common Scoters and 2 Pomarines Skuas (complete wintering in north sea this year).

Local mouvements with 124 Red-throated Divers, 219 Scoters, 3 Velvet Scoters, 1 Great Skua, 150 Aukss. An other time, Migration mouvements for 166 Brent Geese flighing north.

Migration seems to be already regular for 98 Brent Geese (3rd consecutive day) very early this year. Other ducks mouvements concerned 1 Shelduck, 4 Wigeons, 2 Pintails, 4 Gadwalls, 2 Eiders, good numbers for Common Scoters (560 ind.) and 70 Velvet Scoters, best total since 2005. For others species, 3 Great Skuas, 1050 Gannets, 242 Kittiwakes, 86 Fulmars and 300 auks, mainly Guillemots.

Some interesting sightings today with good WNW winds. Some local movements for 91 Red-throated Divers and 2 Fulmar. Few ducks with 31 Shelduck, 1 Eider, 17 Common Scoters, 3 Velvet Scoter,  and the firsts groups of Brent goose (31 ind.) in "spring" migration. 1 Pomarine Skua and  the firsts 2 Arctics Skuas seen today. Some wintering gulls movement with 93 Little Gull and 410 Kittiwake. Some 800 auks species seen today in south movement.

1st session for the year. Good numbers for divers with  290 Red-throated Divers (flying north) and 2 Black-throated Divers. Few ducks with 1 Shelduck, 1 Shoveler, 39 Common Scoters, 1 Velvet Scoter, 9 Eiders, and 2 Red-breasted Merganser. Wintering of Pomarine Skua continue (1 bird today), and so 4-7 Great Skuas. Good numbers for Little Gull (97 ind.). About 800 auks species with both Razorbills and Guillemots in equal numbers for close indivuduals.
